Odfjell Technology delivers first Casing While Drilling operation in Hungary

Published 15.01.2026

Odfjell Technology has successfully delivered its first Casing While Drilling (CwD) operation in Hungary for MOL Group, an international leading integrated oil and gas company. This milestone was achieved on a well that is part of MOL Group’s onshore field development, and was coordinated by Odfjell Technology’s team in Romania.

Through improving the well’s drilling efficiency and wellbore integrity, the operation highlighted Odfjell Technology’s ability to apply its established expertise in new locations while maintaining high standards of safety, precision and reliability.

Odfjell Technology provided complete support throughout the operation, from engineering design to the supply of the CwD bit, float collar from partner OSP, centralizers, torque rings and Tubular Running Services (TRS) equipment. A dedicated team of CwD and TRS specialists also worked on site to oversee planning and execution, making sure each stage of the job ran smoothly.

By reducing rig time, improving consistency and strengthening wellbore stability, the CwD method adds measurable value to onshore fields, contributing directly to cost efficiency and reliable long-term well performance. The single-run approach also helped to minimize downtime and simplify logistics at the rig site.

Using CwD Level 2 technology, the 9 5/8” casing was drilled and set through an 800-metre section of 12 ¼” open hole on a vertical well path. Combining drilling and casing into a single continuous process delivered significant time savings and reduced overall rig exposure.

Variations in drilling mud properties during the operation required careful monitoring and adjustment. These were managed effectively through close collaboration between Odfjell Technology’s engineers and MOL Group’s on-site personnel, maintaining performance and stability throughout the job.

The success of the operation drew on Odfjell Technology’s extensive CwD experience in Romania, where the company has delivered strong results across multiple wells. This regional knowledge enabled the team to implement a proven and well-managed approach in Hungary, ensuring both technical accuracy and agile performance. MOL Group commended the project performance for its strong collaboration, efficient execution and clear operational benefits.
